Just a quick post to share a fun idea. Our local food bank holds an annual event called the Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Many talented artists in the area donate work and some friends and I wanted to join in the fun. As few of us work in ceramics, glass or wood, we decided to focus on what we know and make some fabric bowls.
We simply sewed scraps onto heavy interfacing in a mosaic fashion. There are all sorts of tutorials available and they were really fun to make.
You can even add other embellishments like beading and metallic threads.
In all, I think we made about 15 bowls. Each has its own personality and beauty.
I highly recommend trying this great idea if you have a similar fundraiser in your area.
Great idea for a great cause. You did a wonderful job on them. Each with it's own personality.
ReplyDeleteI was skeptical when we started but was amazed with how great they turned out.
DeleteLOVE it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Beth!
DeleteGreat idea Cynthia!
ReplyDeleteHey Char! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
DeleteWhat a wonderful idea, and beautiful bowls!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cynthia!
DeleteI am blown away and full of ideas for fundraising for both out local food bank and our animal shelter. I will be passing this link along! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear Nita! Besides the cost of the interfacing, the rest of the fabric was cheap as it all came out of scrap bins. Gotta like that!
DeleteThese are wonderful. I would certainly have bought on if I was nearby. You did wonderfully!
ReplyDeleteMy local quilt guild does what we call "Comfort Quilts" that we give to local charities. There are about 115 members in my guild, Chaska Quilters, (we are from MN) and among us we manage to give away at least 60 or more quilts a year. We have people in charge of Comfort Quilts and we have one meeting a year where we bring our sewing machines and work on our Comfort Quilts. We have been lucky enough to get a grant sometimes from Thrivent (one of our member's husband works there) and that allows us to purchase really good material at the local quilt shops. Many of the shops donate to us and I personally make two baby quilts whenever I am doing one for a baby I know. One goes to my baby and the other is given to the Comfort Quilt people who have requests from different organizations who need quilts. I am going to pass this link along to our guild!
ReplyDeleteCan you give me a link to the tutorial teaching the bowls that you created? I searched and cannot find them.
